There is increasing evidence that the development of sustainable partnerships between Universities in the UK and those in resource-poor countries can make valuable contributions to both medical research and capacity building in the latter. From experiences gained from over 30 years of initiating and running partnerships of this type it is now possible to define some of the requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and departmental organisation that is required for their success.
