Dr Matthew Benwell

Profile

Matthew Benwell is a political geographer at Newcastle University (UK) with a particular interest in children's and young people's everyday engagements with the nation and geopolitical events past and present. His regional specialism focuses on the Southern Cone encompassing Argentina, Chile, British Overseas Territories in the South Atlantic (including the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas) and Antarctica. He was formerly a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow working on a project exploring, ‘The making of the geopolitical citizen: the case of the Falklands/Malvinas’. More recently, he has been involved in projects (funded by HERA and UKRI) exploring the everyday experiences of young refugees and asylum seekers in public spaces and during the Covid-19 pandemic.
