Organizational Learning Research Group Keynote Lecture: The ‘practice turn’ and the sociomateriality of learning and knowing

Abstract: This talk will review recent directions into the sociology of practice that emerge from the consideration of sociomaterial relationships in the context of working practices and in relation to how collective knowing is situated within sociomateriality. Some implications for doing research on the topic will be proposed.


Silvia Gherardi is Professor of Sociology of Work at the Faculty of Sociology, University of Trento, Italy, where she has been Director of the Research Unit on Communication, Organizational Learning, and Aesthetics (RUCOLA) since 1993. Her main research interests include the exploration of different "soft" aspects of knowing at work and in organizations, with a particular emphasis on organizational learning processes.

Professor Gherardi has been president of the European Group for Organizational Studies (1997-2000), a board member of various international journals and an active member of international networks on organizational studies. In September 2005 she received a "Doctor Honoris Causa" degree from the Department of Social Sciences of the Danish Roskilde University. In July 2007 she received Honorary Membership of the European Group of Organizational Studies. In June 2010 she received the award of Honorary Doctor from the University of Kuopio (now University of Eastern Finland). She recently authored a book called “How To Conduct A Practice-Based Study. Problems and Methods,” (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2012), and has co-edited, with Antonio Strati, a book called “Learning And Knowing In Practice-Based Studies,” (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2012).
