Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity (CRED) and the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) at Queen Mary University of London are pleased to invite you to the online launch of Dr Louise Ashley's book Highly Discriminating: Why the City isn’t Fair and Diversity Doesn’t Work (Bristol University Press), which is out in paperback on 2 September 2022.
The City of London offers many of the most remunerated jobs in the UK, but despite numerous diversity initiatives, these highly paid professional jobs remain dominated by a narrow class elite. Why do such inequalities persist – and what should we do about it?
At this online webinar, Dr Louise Ashley will discuss her recently published book, Highly Discriminating: Why the City isn’t Fair and Diversity Doesn’t Work, which draws on research, interviews, practitioner literature and internal reports, to show how hiring practices in the City have been highly discriminating in favour of a narrow pool of affluent applicants. She explores what this means for young people from working class backgrounds encouraged to secure these jobs - and to the whole of the UK.
The event will start with a short presentation of the key arguments of the book by the author, Dr Louise Ashley, followed by responses from the Chair, Kate Malleson (Professor of Law and Director of IHSS) and discussants Sophie Pender (Chair and Founder of the 93% Club) and Queen Mary Alumni, who will share their reflections on the key themes of the book. The audience will then be invited to join an interactive Q&A session.
