Chevening Scholar Erica on Studying Global Business and Sustainability at Queen Mary

Originally from Cameroon, Erica is currently pursuing an MSc in Global Business and Sustainability, building on an already accomplished career in finance, entrepreneurship and education.

As a recipient of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, Erica Andiensa Music Epse Ngong brings a strong track record of academic excellence, leadership and real-world impact to her studies at Queen Mary University of London, alongside a clear commitment to driving meaningful change through inclusive and sustainable business practices.  

We caught up with Erica to hear more about her experience on the programme.

A strong foundation in finance and entrepreneurship 

Before joining Queen Mary, Erica built an impressive academic and professional profile: 

"I have a BSc in Banking and Finance and an MBA in Accounting and Finance, both from the University of Buea, Cameroon, and an MSC in Banking and Finance from Biaka Univerity institute of Buea Cameroon. As a professional, I founded a microfinance institution in Cameroon called KOM COOPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED (KOMCCUL) which is a category one microfinance institution that provides Financial Services to the poor and unwanted population. 

This initiative provided access to finance young rural women and young Entrepreneurs to Cameroonian and I grew the institution from 0 to 800+ members and over 3000 daily savers withing 6 years. I also work shared my knowledge and experience by way of lecturing in private higher institutions in Cameroon, reaching more than 1000 student over 9 years." 

 

A drive for growth and impact 

Erica’s decision to pursue postgraduate study was rooted in her ambition to grow and expand her impact: 

"After years of service provision need a career shift in other to grow. I felt like I wasn't growing in my career. And being awarded a Chevening scholarship was a testament to this dream. If I must impact more people, I need to be empowered, and the Chevening scholarship gave me this opportunity just when I needed it the most." 

 

Choosing Queen Mary 

Erica was drawn to both the programme and the wider university experience: 

"I was first of all attracted to the school though programme- it was very unique and comprehensive and was exactly what I wanted. Then, I researched about the University, and the online reviews were very positive, so I compared with other universities I had and went for Queen Mary." 

 

A rich and engaging learning experience 

Reflecting on her time so far, Erica highlights the quality of teaching and industry engagement: 

"Studying at Queen Mary has been a total transformation of my mind and perspective. The programme is rich in content. The way lectures are delivered is amazing. 
We have industry experts come talk with us almost weekly which shapes my perspective of the industry. The lecturers are very concerned about every discussion you have with them; they provide feedback and connect you with the professional who can better help you." 

One of Erica’s biggest surprises has been how her understanding of sustainability has evolved: 

"When I chooses the program, I had a different understanding of what sustainability was; to me I thought it meant building businesses to last, but I realised it was more about Climate change" 

 

Supportive academic environment 

Erica values the support she has received from academic staff: 

"My lecturers so far have supported my learning with great concern." 

She also highlights key skills gained during her studies: 

"Analytical thinking, Globalisation (seeing everything at the global level)" 

 

Community and opportunities 

Erica describes the Queen Mary Business School community as: 

"A loving community which is intentional about what they do." 

She has also taken part in a range of activities beyond the classroom: 

"I have participated in numerous events from career fairs to seminars and they have shaped my thinking as well." 

 

Shaping future ambitions 

The programme has had a significant influence on Erica’s outlook: 

"This programme has helped me to see the market with a global view. It is helping me to see business not just as business but as a solution to sustainability. I am being built for the global economy so I am looking at how I can fit in the global market." 

 

Advice for future students 

Erica strongly encourages prospective students to consider the programme: 

"MSc at Queen Mary is not just a degree, it's an experience you won't want to miss. 
Here you gain from a mix of experience, expert lecturers and industry experts who are all willing to help you. If you must study in UK them study at Queen Mary and thank me later!"
