Ph.D supervision with QMUL and Westminster Abbey
Poets' Corner and global counter-memorialisation
The commemoration of a writer in  Westminster Abbey’s Poets' Corner, from Chaucer to Ted Hughes, is often seen as a final solemnisation of their status as a national treasure. Several scholars of memorialisation have recently examined the history and motives behind their election and sponsorship, in which literary factionalism, the desire to fabricate a common cultural space, and a wish to redress the omissions of past sponsors all feature. But the Empire and Commonwealth ensured that for two centuries the poets of Poets' Corner were also being memorialised through anthologies, education and cultural influence for a global readership, some of whom then wrote poetry in response - a counter-memorialisation which could involve redirection, resistance and rejection as well as respect. We would like to work with a prospective Ph.D  student to develop a research proposal for Queen Mary’s AHRC funding competition on the global afterlife of Poets’ Corner poets. It would build on recent work reconsidering Romanticism as global movement (Chander, Brown Romantics; Hessell, Romantic Literature and the Colonised World), on work on specifically global forms of elegy and ‘postmourning’ (Ramazani) and on global majority poets’ refiguration of historical progress narratives through their creative adaptation of modernist forms (Pollard, New World Modernisms). We are looking for research that addresses both the psychological dimensions of poets’ work, and the literary fields of power and publishing within which they operate. The candidate would work with both supervisors to define their particular line of research and archival path. As well as becoming a Ph.D, the research will inform the way the Abbey presents Poets' Corner to its thousands of visitors from around the world.
The Ph.D funding rules are the same as for all AHRC applications.
