School of Politics and International Relations

EU as an International Actor

The module will provide students with the necessary conceptual and empirical perspectives regarding the EU’s international role. In doing so, it will provide  a detailed understanding of the EU’s role as a global and regional actor, the areas in which the Union acts as a single actor, and those in which the Member States maintain their autonomy.

In order to analyse the role of the EU as an international actor, we will focus on a number of different aspects including trade, enlargement, foreign and security policy, immigration, development and military. At the end of this module, students will develop a specialist and critical knowledge of the EU’s relations with its major international partners and will be able to reflect on some the current external challenges for the EU.
