Professor Tim Bale and Professsor Paul Webb, of the University of Sussex have been awarded an ESRC grant worth £540,000 to research "Party Members in the UK”. The project, which will take place over three years and will be led by Tim, aims to produce original and accurate data on the composition, motivations, opinions, and activities of the members, potential members and, just as importantly, the ex-members, of the UK’s largest political parties. It also aims, by conducting interviews with the parties' professional staffs and elected representatives, to understand the demand side as well as the supply side of party membership.
