Your global community at Queen Mary

Welcome to all our new students arriving this January. You are joining a truly special university and a vibrant community of diverse thinkers and achievers that come from all over the world.

Many of you are joining us for one semester as a visiting Study Abroad or Exchange (Associate) student through Queen Mary’s Global Opportunities team. This semester we are delighted to be welcoming over 680 of you from 119 partner universities in 17 countries.

Queen Mary is a unique place of world-leading research (14th in the world and 5th in the UK for research quality*) and unparalleled diversity and inclusivity, that lives and breathes its history and heritage and is embedded in the communities it serves. We open the doors of opportunity to anyone with the potential to succeed.

As a Queen Mary student, you join the ranks of nine Nobel Prize winners, entrepreneurs, researchers, explorers, artists and more, who have all walked these halls and have helped to change the world, from highlighting the effects of air pollution on children to leading international teams in the discovery of new planets. Explore our Research Highways to discover how when we embrace diversity of thought, opinion and ideas, we can achieve the previously unthinkable. This diversity allows us to tackle society's biggest challenges like no other institution.

Every year, we welcome students from all over the world, with our students and staff representing over 170 nationalities. You bring with you a wealth of knowledge, culture and global insights that adds to the viewpoints on campus, which contributes to our research success and further strengthens our community.

While you settle into your new home here in the UK and Queen Mary, remember that we’re here to support you every step of the way. Queen Mary has fantastic services to help you with your studies, personal challenges, and adjusting to life as a Londoner.

Get ready to learn, grow, and create connections that will last a lifetime. Enjoy your time here and make the most of the wealth of opportunities and discoveries that awaits you!

*For the quality of its research, the University is ranked 14th in the world and 5th in the UK according to the THE World University Ranking 2024, and joint 7th in the UK according to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF2021). See Facts and Figures.
