Queen Mary at the heart of British Government No 10 Downing Street history

Queen Mary's Mile End Group, together with Mile End Films, have created a unique piece of contemporary oral history. The project entitled 'Men and Secrets: The Cabinet Secretaries' consists of a series of detailed and fascinating interviews with the six most recent Cabinet Secretaries, conducted by Lord Peter Hennessy of Nympsfield and Dr Anthony Seldon.

As the most powerful civil servant in the land, the Cabinet Secretary is privy to the most high-level of secrets and sits beside the Prime Minister at the weekly Cabinet meetings. The five previous holders, together with Sir Jeremy Heywood the current incumbent, provided a compelling insight into their role, as well as fascinating illuminations on key historic moments as such the 1984 Brighton bombing and the IRA's mortar attack on No 10 in 1991.

A reception held at No 10 Downing Street on Wednesday 22 May marked the launch of the first two full-length interviews with Robert Armstrong and Robin Butler. Click here to find out more about the project.
