Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott speaks to the Financial Times’ Brexit Unspun podcast
Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Anniversary Chair in Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context (CLSGC) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), speaks to the Financial Times’ Brexit Unspun podcast about the legitimacy of the Brexit process and the impact on our democracy of the bill currently going through parliament. She said: “The fact it is an advisory referendum doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s flawed, but it does have consequences. In Britain, we don’t have a code of high constitution, referendums aren’t a typical part of our constitution. We’ve had very, very few all UK referendums, but they are lawful. And this particular referendum, the EU one, went through both Houses of Parliament as legislation. So, it’s a valid bill.”
