Research degrees

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK’s top research universities, ranked fifth for world-leading and internationally excellent research (REF 2014).

From the discovery of a new world, Proxima b, to the application of new cancer treatments; the shaping of international trade policies to the physics of music – our research influences public policy, improves health and social conditions, advances specialist knowledge, and informs cultural debate.

When you join Queen Mary, you become part of a thriving community of 1,700 postgraduate research students. You will have access to a brand new £39 million Graduate Centre, numerous sources of funding, and researcher development training too, all supported by our dedicated Doctoral College team.

Our home in London makes Queen Mary an ideal place to conduct your research, surrounded by some of the world’s best museums, libraries, institutes, and archives.

And we attract substantial research funding too – last year (2016/17) we received more than £5m annually from Research Councils UK to support doctoral research. We also awarded more than £2.5m for PhD studentships.

How can I study my PhD with Queen Mary?

This autumn, we have confirmed 220 research degree studentship opportunities across all our disciplines. 120 are fully funded and 100 are part funded.

There are several ways to study your PhD with us. First, we have advertised funded projects that are listed in the table below. But you can also get in touch with our Schools and Institutes with an idea for your own research project. The first, and most important stage of your PhD application is to identify a supervisor with whom you would like to work with for at least 3 years.

Whether you’re interested in science, engineering, medicine, dentistry, humanities, or social sciences, you can begin your PhD journey with us.
