Raihan Mohammad
Study Abroad – BA English Language and Linguistics

"QMUL has given me so much more than I expected, from the number of module options for my major, large campuses and libraries (where you can buy coffee and snacks) to the great atmosphere of East London. I remember stepping out of Stepney Green station and entering the Mile End Campus for the first time, I knew I was going to love it here! The buildings had a modern yet traditional blend and the cleanliness of the campus just makes studying here even better. Having classes from Mondays to Thursdays sounds like my timetable is jam-packed but it’s not! Lectures and seminars run together in the two hours assigned for every module which is a (good) surprise because I don’t think I’ll ever be this free back in Brunei. The lecturers here never fail to spark a sense of curiosity in me! Every class is interesting and fun in its own way and the other students here are helpful and friendly.

The coursework here is not as ‘heavy’ as I am normally used to and the lecturers are always at the ready to help if I am not sure about anything. One of the modules I am taking here requires the use of a language laboratory which I am always excited to attend. It is refreshing, for me, to see the practical and technological side of linguistics.

I can definitely see why London is the greatest city on Earth! My top three favourite things about London is the architecture, the history and of course, the variety of food and shopping places. I love how I can jog in Hyde Park in the morning, then have lunch and go on a shopping trip in the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, then enjoy live music in Covent Garden by the evening and have coffee in Bayswater before going back to Paddington. All this in a day! London surprises and interests me more and more each time I step out of Brunei Hall.

I have found Brunei Hall to be a ‘home away from home’. The residents and staff here are very helpful and the food here is inexpensive and always tempting! There are other halal options around the area such as Chicken Cottage or Subway. In addition, The Students Unit is only a staircase away if residents require any assistance regarding fees or purchasing flight tickets. Paddington station is a two minute walk from Brunei Hall and there are numerous bus stops which basically mean that getting around London won’t be a problem.

Queen Mary University of London has met and went beyond my expectations. I am already looking into the Postgraduate programmes here in Queen Mary. The university does not disappoint and it has so much to offer. There is always something new and interesting on campus!"
