Discover DERI

DERI is a vibrant hub for digital and data science focused on interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation with impact

The Digital Environment

Rapid advances in digitisation and technology are transforming human activity. Experts at DERI focus on all aspects of this digital transformation, from understanding its impact at individual and societal perspective to development and deployment of novel AI-driven technologies that will benefit academia, industry, government and broader society.

Our Philosophy

We aim to:

  • Build on globally recognised expertise at Queen Mary and foster new interdisciplinary collaborations across the University and internationally.
  • Use our physical and virtual space to bring together a network of leading academic and industrial organisations, as well as local communities, to support growth in AI and digital technologies and deliver impact for society.
  • Support wider ambitions to maintain UK leadership in data science and AI by creating and sharing knowledge that drives progress in digital and data science and its applications.

DERI Represents Queen Mary's Novel Approach to Research

DERI is the first “University Research Institute" established as part of Queen Mary’s ambitious Strategy 2030. Our University Research Institutes are envisioned to be research hubs that cut across traditional discipline boundaries and align with our strengths and societal challenges. They create opportunities for scholars from across the university to work together and continue pushing the boundaries of research and innovation. Since its launch, DERI has been joined by the Precision Healthcare University Research Institute

Introduction to DERI, our director Greg gives an overview of DERI's ambitions.

Two of our Fellows Dr Philippa Williams and Dr Mark Freestone also discuss being part of the Institute.
