Our guide to Clearing and Adjustment

If you haven’t secured a place at university, or choose to apply for another, you can enter Clearing or Adjustment. Follow our step-by-step guides to find your way to your perfect course at QMUL.

QMUL’s Clearing hotline:

0800 376 1800 (UK calls)
+44 (0)20 7882 5511 (overseas calls)

Clearing

Clearing runs from 5 July to 23 October. However, places at QMUL are limited and given on a first come first served basis. Most of our courses are likely to be filled before September, so if you are interested in studying at Queen Mary, get in touch as soon as you receive your results.

1

Entering Clearing

During the Clearing period, available courses are displayed on UCAS and our website.

2

Finding the right course

You’ll be spending at least three years studying for your degree, so it’s important to find a course that’s right for you. Check course content, structure and modules available. If you are applying to an institution outside of your original UCAS choices, make sure to do some research about the university itself too.

3

Applying for a course

Once you have made a shortlist of courses you are interested in, you will need to start calling universities. Please be aware that we will only consider applicants who have spoken to a member of our Admissions team. You can speak to our Admissions team by calling our Clearing hotline on 0800 376 1800 (UK) or +44 (0)20 7882 5511 (overseas).

Remember to have the following information to hand when you call:

  • your name, UCAS number and Clearing number (if applicable)
  • your qualifications
  • the name of the course you are interested in
  • your UCAS history (ie if you have applied to university before or if you have received offers from other universities)
  • your fee status (ie whether you are a home, EU or overseas student)
  • your contact telephone number and email address

Please note that our UCAS Institutional code is Q50

Confirming your place

Once you have received a verbal offer from a university, you will need to make this course your Clearing choice on UCAS Track. To do this, go to the ‘Your choices’ section of Track and click 'Add Clearing choice’, then enter the details of the course. Once you have done this, your chosen university will be able to confirm your place. Your offer will show as accepted on Track and you will receive a confirmation letter.

You should only add a course to Track if you are willing to accept the offer.

Adjustment

Adjustment is available from 17 August until 31 August.

If you exceed the requirements of your firm offer, you can enter Adjustment. This allows you to look for another course whilst retaining your current place.

1

Registering for Adjustment

Once your original conditional offer becomes an unconditional offer, you will see the option to register for Adjustment in UCAS Track. You will then have five days (including weekends) to secure a new place.

2

Researching courses

There is no vacancy list for Adjustment. Check course details by using the UCAS search tool and universities’ individual websites. You will need to call the universities that you are interested in and find out if there are any places available. You can call our Admissions team on 0800 376 1800 (UK) or +44 (0)20 7882 5511 (overseas). Make sure to have your UCAS number to hand.

3

Accepting your offer

Once you have confirmed over the phone that you wish to accept an offer through Adjustment, the university will process your offer and you will lose your original firm choice. Track will be updated and you will see your new choice on the screen. You will also receive a confirmation letter.

Remember you can only hold one Adjustment offer, so think carefully about your decision.
