Dental Materials with Industrial Experience

Overview

Dental Materials is multi-disciplinary and draws on all branches of science to combine them with manufacturing technology and design to overcome dental and maxillofacial (bones of the jaw and face) problems. Dental materials scientists study the processing, structure and properties of materials and the interactions of these materials with the tissues of the face and mouth. These programmes are an exciting part of our suite of medically related degrees. Both the BEng and MEng programmes contain specialist modules on dental materials, maxillofacial anatomy, biomaterials.

Structure

You will start with specialist modules from the first year, while gaining a solid foundation in materials engineering by studying core materials modules. In the 3rd and 4th years you will choose modules from a broad range of Dental Materials course options (see Programme Structure below).  You can follow the links for details for each module, and also visit the SEMS website for information on projects and facilities.

2018 Entry requirements

A-LevelGrades AAA at A-Level. This must include at least two A-Level subjects of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. Excludes General Studies and Critical Thinking.
IBInternational Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum of 36 points overall, including 6,6,5 from three Higher Level subjects. At least two subjects of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry are required at Higher Level.
BTEC See our detailed subject and grade requirements
Access HEWe consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline. Entry will normally be to the BEng or BSc. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis. Before a decision is made, applicants will be invited to a Maths test at Queen Mary, normally in April. This Maths test will assess whether an applicants ability in Maths is at the required level. Applicants will be contacted shortly after the test with a decision on their application.
GCSEMinimum five GCSE passes including English at grade C or 4.

2017 Entry requirements

A-levels
Typical grades required: AAA, must include two from Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The third subject can be any subject excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking.

International Baccalaureate
Subjects and grades required: 36 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher level with 6,6,6 points (including two from Maths, Physics and Chemistry).

General Admissions Entry Requirements

English Language Proficiency

All applicants to QMUL must show they meet a minimum academic English language standard for admission and to be successful on the course, to the indicated levels for the area of study. See our guidance on English Language requirements for all degree programmes.

Vocational and Other Qualifications

The College accepts a wide range of qualifications such as Access and Foundation programmes, vocational awards, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Highers and other Baccalaureates. You are advised to contact the Admissions team (admissions@qmul.ac.uk) before making an application so that we can give individual advice.

Admission is based on academic merit and on the proven ability of the applicant to achieve success on their chosen programme of study. Every application to Queen Mary is considered on its individual merits with personal statement and reference taken into consideration.

Combined Qualifications

If you are taking a combination of qualifications at Level 3, we will consider your academic profile and may make offers on a case-by-case basis. You are advised to contact the Admissions team (admissions@qmul.ac.uk) before making an application so that we can give individual advice.

Advanced Entry

Subject to the policy of the programme, it may be possible for students to join undergraduate degree programmes at the beginning of the second year of a three or four year degree programme or, sometimes, the beginning of the third year of a four year programme. Please note, not all schools will consider advanced entry. You are advised to contact the Admissions team (admissions@qmul.ac.uk) before making an application for individual advice.

If you are applying for advanced entry on the basis of a post A-Level qualification, such as the BTEC HND, you should apply via UCAS in the usual way. If you wish to transfer your degree studies from another UK higher education institution, you will be considered on the basis of your original A-Level or equivalent qualifications, current syllabus, academic references and results.

We typically expect you to have achieved a 2.1 standard on your current programme and have already met the standard equivalent first year entry requirements. Applications must be submitted via UCAS.

Learning and teaching

As a student in the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) you will be taught through a combination of lectures, problem-solving classes, laboratory practicals, problem-based learning and a variety of coursework. 
In the third year you will undertake a major project: an individual research project based around the in the current internationally-recognised research taking place in SEMS. This project will be based in the labs and gives you the opportunity to apply the theory you will have learnt in the first two years of study while taking advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities within SEMS.

Industrial experience:
All our programmes are available with an option to spend a year in industry as part of your course (normally after the second year). The year will significantly develop your communication, problem solving and team working skills. It will also give you invaluable experience to draw on when applying for positions after graduation. The School exploits its strong links with industry to help students find appropriate placements. Our Industrial Liaison Forum also encourages employers to sponsor and support students and to provide real design case studies to engage you throughout the course. Recent case studies were delivered by Bridgestone, DePuy, Apatech, Artis, Corus, BAE, DSTL and Rolls Royce. Find out more on the School of Engineering and Materials website.

Assessment:
All our degree programmes are structured with eight modules per year, split over two semesters. Some modules, such as the research and design projects, count for two or four modules. In the third and fourth years, you select from a range of module options allowing you to tailor your degree to specific areas of interest within your specialist degree programme, working in the SEMS laboratory Facilities. Assessment is continuous throughout your degree, with written reports, projects, presentations, group work and exams (exams take place in the summer).

You can either take out a Tuition Fee Loan (see Funding section below) to pay your fees or, if you are paying them yourself, you can pay in instalments.

Tuition fees for a year abroad or placement year on a full time undergraduate course will be a proportion of the full fee for the year in which you commence your time abroad or placement.

Loans and Grants available to help with tuition fees and living costs

Student Finance England administers all grant and loans for your studies if you normally live in England.

If you live in WalesScotland or Northern Ireland you have an equivalent Student Finance department for your region.

Through Student Finance England, you can apply for (figures relate to programmes starting from September 2016):

  • A Tuition Fee Loan of up to £9,000 to pay all or part of your fees
  • A Maintenance Loan of up to £10,702 to help pay your living costs like rent, food and travel
  • Extra grants if you have a disability or you have children or an adult dependant
  • You might get a grant to cover some travel expenses if you normally live in England but study away from home. If you’re a medical or dental student you might also qualify for help with the costs of attending clinical placements in the UK.

Graduate Employment

Graduates from Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Materials Science go on to work in a wide variety of careers. Some apply their degree knowledge directly, entering careers in clinical materials, research or, manufacturing whilst others transfer skills gained during study into areas such as consultancy or finance. Many graduates also go on to study dentistry.

The national 2012 destination survey confirmed that 85% of Engineering and Materials Science graduates were in employment and/or study six months after graduation, with 72% already working/studying at graduate level. The School’s graduates have a strong earning power, with a median salary of £21,542.

Throughout the course, students have access to an annual QM Careers and Enterprise Centre programme, to prepare them for internships and graduate level work. This includes employer led workshops on job applications and interviews as well as over 70 employer events to facilitate networks and help students to explore their options.

Recent careers events in the School of Engineering and Materials Science include a large employer and alumni networking forum and a weekly timetabled careers slot in which large and small employers provide information, advice and skills training. Last year over 100 companies and alumni came to speak to Queen Mary Engineering & Materials Science students, including De Puy, Mirel Plastics, Siemens, Morgan Crucible, Transport for London, Rolls Royce, BAA, EADS Astrium, Sugru, Bose, Microsoft, Qioptiq and Land Rover.

Opportunities for work experience are substantial given Queen Mary’s location between Canary Wharf, the City and the Olympic Village. Students are encouraged to build their work experience throughout their period of study. Opportunities can be found through QProjects, a local work experience scheme, QRecruit, which advertises internships and temporary work, Experience Works, a part time work fair, and volunteering with QMSU Provide. There are also over 1400 vacancies to browse on the QM JobOnline vacancy site.

Why Materials?

Having always been interested in working in the healthcare industry, I was looking for alternative courses to medicine/dentistry (due to my aversion to blood!) when I came across Materials. It was the perfect combination of Maths and Sciences, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed! Dental Materials in particular supports the healthcare industry and is primarily concerned with studying the structure and properties of the materials found in the mouth and how to replace them artificially. It also appealed to me as it was a ‘new’ and upcoming course, and there is so much scope for research in this rapidly evolving field.

Why QMUL?


The primary reason was because it is part of the famous, ‘University of London’. It is a highly rated research department with state of the art equipment. Moreover QMUL is the only university in the UK to offer Dental Materials at an undergraduate level, It is also the only campus based university in London, only fifteen minutes from the city centre, and it is renowned for its vibrant, multicultural and cosmopolitan environment.

What do you do?


The course deals with various engineering and physiological subjects, the knowledge of which is built up gradually over 3 years. It mainly involves studying the structure, function and properties of the materials found in the mouth/body and then learning about and developing artificial materials with similar attributes to replace them. Since I am in my final year, I will be working on a project which involves research and, if successful, can be carried on to PhD level. I also represent the School of Engineering and Materials Science as an ambassador, which enables me to meet new people and promote the course and university to interested students and parents.

What is the best part of being a student here?

The School of Engineering and Materials Science is very friendly and, at the same time, we are taught by experts in their fields. PBL (problem based learning) forms a vital part of the curriculum and is a fun way to learn. It encourages team work and analytical thought processes, as well as improving time management and presentation skills. It also teaches us how to tackle real life industrial problems and what research involves. First year students are guaranteed a place in the halls of residence (ed. if they hand in all the paperwork by 30 June), which is a huge relief for someone moving away from home. Our Student Union is one of the best in London with a bar, several restaurants and a huge fitness centre. It also boasts a number of societies and communities, and affords an opportunity to meet people with similar interests who might not necessarily be on the same course.
 
What do you plan to do after graduation?


I have applied to the Graduate Entry Programme for Dentistry at QMUL, as I have really enjoyed my time here and would love to stay on. The other option is staying on to do a Masters or undertaking a PhD in this field.
