Our BSc in Marketing and Management examines the marketing function, its interaction with the organisation and the rest of society. It will enable you to build specialist knowledge in the areas of marketing, marketing strategy and communications and develop skills in marketing methods and techniques that are specifically appropriate for marketing professionals. This programme is ideal for students wishing to follow a professional career in marketing or management, marketing analytics, merchandising, sales management and consumer policies. Entry requirements


Typical tariff or grades required: AAA–AAB from three A-Levels.

Additional information: You must also have five GCSEs at grade A*–C including B in English and B in Maths.

Excluded subjects: General Studies and Critical Thinking.

International Baccalaureate

Subjects and grades required: 36–34 points overall, with 6,6,6-6,6,5 in higher level subjects, including at least 5 in higher level English or 6 in standard level English, and at least 4 in standard level maths.

Learning and teaching

Learning and Teaching:
Typically, each module runs for one semester (12 weeks) and normally features a one/two hour lecture and a one hour seminar per week. A lecture is led by an academic who lectures to a large group of students all of whom are taking the same module. Seminar groups have approximately 20 students. Seminar teaching involves a variety of student-centred activities which also include (but not exclusively) individual and group presentations, group work, and discussion groups.

Independent Study:
For every hour spent at University you will be expected to complete a further 2 - 3 hours of independent study.  Your individual study time could be spent preparing for, or following up on formal study sessions; reading; producing written work; completing projects; and revising for examinations. 

The direction of your individual study will be guided by the formal study sessions you attend, along with your reading lists and assignments.  However, we expect you to demonstrate an active role in your own learning by reading widely and expanding your own knowledge, understanding and critical ability. 

Independent study will foster in you the ability to identify your own learning needs and determine which areas you need to focus on to become proficient in your subject area.  This is an important transferable skill and will help to prepare you for the transition to working life.

The BSc in Marketing and Management is a three-year degree, taught within the College’s modular system. You are expected to take eight modules per year, each of which is normally assessed by a combination of coursework (group reports, presentations, assignments) and/or an examination in May or June. You will therefore normally have taken twenty-four modules in completing your degree. The modular system allows much more flexibility than the traditional system. Subject to meeting a module’s prerequisites, you may in principle choose from modules taught in the School of Business and Management, as well as those from all other schools and departments in the College (except the School of Medicine and Dentistry). You will need to make sure, however, that your choice of modules is consistent with the structure of the Marketing and Management degree, and modules taken outside the School should be complementary to your main studies. Your Academic Adviser will guide you through this process.

You can either take out a Tuition Fee Loan (see Funding section below) to pay your fees or, if you are paying them yourself, you can pay in instalments.

Tuition fees for a year abroad or placement year on a full time undergraduate course will be a proportion of the full fee for the year in which you commence your time abroad or placement.

Loans and Grants available to help with tuition fees and living costs

Student Finance England administers all grant and loans for your studies if you normally live in England.

If you live in WalesScotland or Northern Ireland you have an equivalent Student Finance department for your region.

Through Student Finance England, you can apply for (figures relate to programmes starting from September 2016):

  • A Tuition Fee Loan of up to £9,000 to pay all or part of your fees
  • A Maintenance Loan of up to £10,702 to help pay your living costs like rent, food and travel
  • Extra grants if you have a disability or you have children or an adult dependant
  • You might get a grant to cover some travel expenses if you normally live in England but study away from home. If you’re a medical or dental student you might also qualify for help with the costs of attending clinical placements in the UK.

Graduate Employment


Graduates from Queen Mary’s School of Business and Management go on to work in a wide variety of careers. Some apply their degree knowledge directly, entering careers such as business analyst or marketing and sales manager, whilst others transfer skills gained during study into areas such as media, law or finance.

Throughout the course, students have access to an annual QM Careers and Enterprise Centre programme, to prepare them for internships and graduate level work. This includes employer led workshops on job applications and interviews as well as over 70 employer events to facilitate networks and help students to explore their options.

Recent careers activities in the School of Business and Management include QConsult, a 6 week project where groups of students act as consultants for real clients, on-site visits to RBS finance department, HR and banking mentoring from professionals, in-curriculum CV training, and fortnightly workshops training students in job search and recruitment skills. Students also have access to the QM Business and Finance Fair and 3 week ‘Focus on Finance’ programme.

Opportunities for work experience are substantial given Queen Mary’s location between Canary Wharf, the City and the Olympic Village. Students are encouraged to build their work experience throughout their period of study. Opportunities can be found through QProjects, a local work experience scheme, QRecruit, which advertises internships and temporary work, Experience Works, a part time work fair, and volunteering with QMSU Provide. There are also over 1400 vacancies to browse on the QM JobOnline vacancy site.
