Applications usually open in November with a view to start the PhD the following September. We have limited opportunities through the year at the mid-year starting points of January and April. A shortlist of candidates will be selected and invited for interview after which offers of studentships will be made. A typical time plan for applications is below (although it can be different depending on the applicant circumstances and funding schemes):
All applicants are encouraged to apply early, to increase chances of gaining a place. Overseas candidates may be eligible for a number of studentships with differing application closing dates. In these cases please contact us.
The applications process is online and can be found here:Online application form
Please use the link for Full Time research degrees. You will be asked to enter your information and will have the opportunity to upload supporting material including:
Further information including guidance notes can be found here. If neccesary you can save the information and continue the application at a later time.
For "Research Group" please enter "Condensed Matter and Matterials Physics". You do not need to submit a detailed research proposal, or to name a specific supervisor, however if you have a strong wish to participate in a particular project, or to work with a particular supervisor please indicate this on the application form. Note that funding is sometimes specifically for a particular project/supervisor; these will be clearly indicated in the projects page. If you wish to be considered for this funding/project, it is advisable to indicate this on your application form. Selected candidates will then be invited for interview and an opportunity to meet the group and view our facilities, although some overseas candidates will be interviewed by telephone or video link.
