qLegal attends the first ‘London Law Clinics - Round Table’ discussion

In January 2024, qLegal participated in the inaugural 'London Law Clinics - Round Table' discussion hosted by UCL’s Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (“UCL iLAC”). It was an enjoyable experience meeting fellow clinicians and sharing best practices regarding clinical legal education.

The plan is to organise these round table discussions twice a year, with the next gathering hosted by the City Community Legal Advice Centre (“City CLAC”) in summer 2024.

How is qLegal engaging with the broader clinical legal education community?

qLegal is proud to be a member of the Clinical Legal Education Organisation (“CLEO”), a UK-based charitable organisation that aims to foster, promote, and develop clinical legal education in all its forms. We are also proud to be one of the first commercial law clinics in the UK.

Clinical legal education, an integral aspect of legal education in England and Wales, involves law students providing legal services under professional supervision. The majority of legal services offered by university law schools through clinical legal education are pro bono, catering to individuals and organisations facing barriers to accessing legal advice. Clinical legal education typically involves collaboration with numerous stakeholders and presents opportunities for qualified solicitors, law students, and the third sector to come together to deliver essential, free legal services.

qLegal actively participates in the CLE community through various channels, including conferences, articles, and podcasts. For instance:

  • 11 September 2023, Eliza presented on "Measuring the Impact of Clinics on Clients" at a UK-wide gathering of CLEO members hosted by the University of Derby.
  • Clemence and Eliza co-presented on “Using Legal Design to Improve Public Legal Education Workshops” at the annual Enhancing Clinical Legal Education in Europe (“ENCLE”) conference in Liverpool in the summer of 2023.
  • qLegal’s experience teaching law students to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset was featured in the 2023 Special Edition of the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education (“IJCLE”) in an article entitled “Thinking Like Entrepreneurs: qLegal's Experience of Teaching Law Students to Have an Entrepreneurial Mindset.”
  • Emily and Eliza discussed their Thinking Like Entrepreneurs article with Dr. Elaine Gregersen on the Clinical Legal Education Podcast.

Where can you meet the qLegal team next?

  • Karen will be attending the IJCLE conference, themed 'Clinical Legal Education: The Creation of Knowledge Through Transformative Experience,' on 22-24 July 2024 in Amsterdam.
  • qLegal is pleased to announce that the annual UK gathering of CLEO members on 4 September 2024 will take place at qLegal’s premises at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies. Stay tuned for further information.

The qLegal team looks forward to continuing its engagement with the broader clinical legal education community!
