Tories' hardline drift may lose the public

Research led by Queen Mary’s Professor Tim Bale shows that while Conservative members are notably more right-wing on economic issues, as you might expect, Tory MPs are even more right-leaning.

According to 2020 research by Queen Mary University of London, Conservative party membership tends to be older, male, southern English and Brexit supporting – meaning a leadership election can skew more towards a right-wing agenda than the rest of the country.
