Marking the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush, Wasafiri, the magazine of international contemporary writing, is excited to announce the publication of Windrush: Writing the Scandal.
Based at Queen Mary University of London, Wasafiri is the UK’s leading magazine for international contemporary writing.
This essential collection of important, informed, and inspiring voices, guest edited by Henghameh Saroukhani and John McLeod, asks what it means to tell the story of an ongoing catastrophe. In the context of hostility against those ‘illegalised’ by the state, the poets, journalists, critics, artists, filmmakers, and activists gathered in this global and interdisciplinary special issue demonstrate how advocacy and art intertwine in the midst of an unravelling political crisis.
The issue opens with a lead feature from Gary Younge, with interviews with Caryl Phillips and Hazel V Carby, accompanied by poetry from Momtaza Mehri, Hannah Lowe, James Goodwin, and Roger Robinson, life writing from activist Zita Holbourne, and fiction from this year’s OCM Bocas Prize-winner Ira Mathur, as well as a rich mix of academic articles and book reviews.

The issue will be launched in partnership with Black Cultural Archives in Brixton at an already sold out event on Saturday 24 June, featuring readings from the issue and a panel discussion.
