Overview

Queen Mary University of London seeks at least 15 world leading translational researchers in medicine and dentistry.

About Queen Mary’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Queen Mary’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FMD) is home to the first official medical University in England, formed in 1785. The Faculty offers international excellence in research and teaching, with extensive links and partnerships across the world.  Through our community and close partnerships with NHS Trusts, we are in an exceptional position to deliver innovative healthcare that meets the needs of our local diverse community of 2.5 million people from 97 nations, as well as working with partners globally to address inequalities in healthcare. Through education and research, we are committed to transforming the health outcomes, the wellbeing, and the prosperity of those we serve through our mission:  Better health for all.

Queen Mary is the most inclusive University of its kind, with a mission to open the doors to opportunity through our research and education. As a result of our commitment to inclusivity, we are one of only seven faculties in the UK to hold an Athena Swan Gold Award, recognising our achievements in gender equality in medicine. We also have a strong commitment to public engagement, including through the pioneering science education centre in Whitechapel, the Centre of the Cell, which has been visited by over 427,000 people.

Queen Mary’s Research Excellence

Queen Mary is ranked 14th in the world and 5th in the UK for the quality of our research (THE World University Rankings 2024). As a Faculty, we are 5th in the world for quality of research and 9th in the world for international outlook in clinical and health (THE World University Ranking 2024).

We offer a supportive environment for inter-disciplinary high-impact health sciences research. We collaborate on and host major centres and programmes such as the City of London Cancer Centre, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Barts Biomedical Research Centre, Brain Tumour Charity Centre, Genes and Health, and we led the 100,000 Genomes Project.

Our researchers change lives by ensuring that north east London has the best blood pressure, cholesterol and kidney disease control. Our research has shaped national and international guidelines on hepatitis C treatment and screening, helping to eradicate the virus in the UK and elsewhere. Our research has eliminated 95% of this virus in local people and reduced mortality by 22%. Our research has also led the NHS to adopt anastrozole in the prevention of breast cancer.

An exciting time to join Queen Mary.

This is an exciting time at Queen Mary as over the next five years medicine and dentistry will expand by 140 academics. Together with Barts Health NHS Trust and commercial partners, our Barts Life Sciences initiative will deliver an extensive redevelopment project to Whitechapel, opening up one million square feet of a new Life Sciences estate and rejuvenating the Old Royal London Hospital site.

Seeking world-leading researchers

We are launching a campaign to attract at least 15 world-leading translational researchers in medicine and dentistry at Professorial level in cancer, cardiovascular medicine, genomics, inflammation, precision healthcare, population health and big data science. Successful candidates will publish in the highest impact journals and have major grant success. We are also open to hearing from candidates that come from other research areas who would like to join us and transform lives.
