English language requirements
All students must meet QMUL's English language requirements.
You need a good level of English language to study at QMUL. Specific English entry requirements are listed for each programme, so check your programme English language entry requirements before applying.
Please note: in addition to the English entry requirements listed for each programme, you must achieve a minimum of B2 (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent) in each language component.
If you do not have the English level yet, you may be able to take a Pre-Sessional English course or you can continue to take English tests in your country to reach the level you need.
Please note: you should normally have a minimum of IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) in each language component in order to take the Pre-Sessional course.
In exceptional cases, students with a component score below IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) may be admitted to the Pre-Sessional course, subject to the Admissions team’s assessment.
Students who need a Tier 4 visa
A few of you will need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) when you apply for your QMUL programme. Please check below to see if you need a SELT, or if you do not need a SELT.
You need a SELT
- If you apply to study the Pre-Sessional English course or one of the International Foundation Programmes (IFP or ISEFP), you need a SELT, which you must take at a UKVI approved centre [PDF]. The test must be taken under UKVI conditions and your scoresheet must include a UKVI Number to reflect this.
- Remember to check your programme English language entry requirements
You do not need a SELT
- If you apply to study an undergraduate, postgraduate or Pre-Masters programme, you do not need a SELT and you are not affected by the above regulations, but check your programme English language entry requirements before applying.
