Aerospace Engineering

H400 MEng (Hons) 4 years

Overview

Aerospace Engineering is concerned with the design and development of aircraft, helicopters and spacecraft. The skills you will develop on these degrees apply to both future spacecraft and high-performance aircraft in addition to the next generation of ground transport, such as high-speed trains. If you are on the MEng programme you will work on a group project in fourth year; recent examples include the design and construction of a rocket capable of breaking the UK altitude record and the design of a solar-powered racing car. All of our aerospace degree programmes are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society

Structure

You will start with specialist modules from the first year, while gaining a solid foundation in engineering by studying core engineering modules. In the 3rd year you will choose modules from a broad range of Aerospace Engineering course options (see Programme Structure below).  You can follow the links for details for each module, and also visit the SEMS website for information on projects and facilities.

The numbers in brackets indicate the academic level of each module, where a typical first year module is delivered at a level 4, whilst a master's module is delivered at level 7.

Entry requirements

A-levels
Typical grades required: AAA, must include Maths and Physics. The third subject can be any subject excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking.

International Baccalaureate
Subjects and grades required: 36 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher level with 6,6,6 points (including Maths and Physics).

Learning and teaching

As a student in the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) you will be taught through a combination of lectures, problem-solving classes, laboratory practicals, problem-based learning and a variety of coursework. 
In the third year you will undertake a major project: an individual research project based around the in the current internationally-recognised research taking place in SEMS. This project will be based in the labs and gives you the opportunity to apply the theory you will have learnt in the first two years of study while taking advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities within SEMS.

Industrial experience:
All our programmes are available with an option to spend a year in industry as part of your course (normally after the second year). The year will significantly develop your communication, problem solving and team working skills. It will also give you invaluable experience to draw on when applying for positions after graduation. The School exploits its strong links with industry to help students find appropriate placements. Our Industrial Liaison Forum also encourages employers to sponsor and support students and to provide real design case studies to engage you throughout the course. Recent case studies were delivered by Bridgestone, DePuy, Apatech, Artis, Corus, BAE, DSTL and Rolls Royce. Find out more on the School of Engineering and Materials website.

Assessment:
All our degree programmes are structured with eight modules per year, split over two semesters. Some modules, such as the research and design projects, count for two or four modules. In the third and fourth years, you select from a range of module options allowing you to tailor your degree to specific areas of interest within your specialist degree programme, working in the SEMS laboratory Facilities. Assessment is continuous throughout your degree, with written reports, projects, presentations, group work and exams (exams take place in the summer).

Tuition fees

Fees are charged at a Home/EU rate for UK and EU nationals, and an overseas rate for International students - find out more about how your tuition fee status is assessed.

You can either take out a Tuition Fee Loan (see Funding section below) to pay your fees or, if you are paying them yourself, you can pay in instalments.

Tuition fees for a year abroad or placement year on a full time undergraduate course will be a proportion of the full fee for the year in which you commence your time abroad or placement.

Loans and Grants available to help with tuition fees and living costs

Student Finance England administers all grant and loans for your studies if you normally live in England.

If you live in WalesScotland or Northern Ireland you have an equivalent Student Finance department for your region.

Through Student Finance England, you can apply for (figures relate to programmes starting from September 2016):

  • A Tuition Fee Loan of up to £9,000 to pay all or part of your fees
  • A Maintenance Loan of up to £10,702 to help pay your living costs like rent, food and travel
  • Extra grants if you have a disability or you have children or an adult dependant
  • You might get a grant to cover some travel expenses if you normally live in England but study away from home. If you’re a medical or dental student you might also qualify for help with the costs of attending clinical placements in the UK.

Graduate Employment

Graduates from Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Materials Science go on to work in a wide variety of careers. Some apply their degree knowledge directly, entering careers such as aerospace engineering, manufacturing or hi-tech industries, whilst others transfer skills gained during study into areas such as consultancy, IT, or finance.

The national 2012 destination survey confirmed that 84% of graduates on Engineering courses were in employment and/or study six months after graduation with 73% already working/studying at graduatelevel. Queen Mary Engineering graduates have a strong earning power, with a median salary of £20,389.

Throughout the course, students have access to an annual QM Careers and Enterprise Centre programme, to prepare them for internships and graduate level work. This includes employer led workshops on job applications and interviews as well as over 70 employer events to facilitate networks and help students to explore their options.

Recent careers events in the School of Engineering and Materials Science include a large employer and alumni networking forum and a weekly timetabled careers slot in which large and small employers provide information, advice and skills training. Last year over 100 companies and alumni came to speak to Queen Mary Engineering students, including Gatwick Airport, Transport for London, Rolls Royce, BAA, EADS Astrium, Bose, Microsoft, Siemens, De Puy, Selex Galileo and Jaguar Land Rover.

Opportunities for work experience are substantial given Queen Mary’s location between Canary Wharf, the City and the Olympic Village. Students are encouraged to build their work experience throughout their period of study. Opportunities can be found through QProjects, a local work experience scheme, QRecruit, which advertises internships and temporary work, Experience Works, a part time work fair, and volunteering with QMSU Provide. There are also over 1400 vacancies to browse on the QM JobOnline vacancy site.

Queen Mary’s extensive campus also provides over 1200 on-campus job and volunteer opportunities ranging from E-learning Assistant to Gym Instructor and from Society President to Student Mentor.

Why did you choose Queen Mary?
It’s the oldest institution in the UK to teach Aeronautical Engineering and has good facilities. Coming from the heart of Wales, a move to multicultural east London was very tempting.

What did you gain from your time at Queen Mary?
The degree at Queen Mary was really useful as it combined the standard methods of learning like exams and tutorials with lots of projects and group work. This helped with my team working, organisational and presentation skills.

What can current students do to prepare for getting a job in your area?

Firstly, to do a PhD you’ve got to be interested in your subject! To demonstrate this make sure you do well in your third and fourth year projects and build good relationships with the people who will write your references: your project supervisor and personal tutor. That, and your grades will be important, so work hard especially in the modules linked to the area you want to do a PhD in.
