The School's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee was established in September 2019. The aim of which is to review policy, procedures, values and behaviours in the School to ensure that we have an inclusive environment for all staff and students. As part of which we aim to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion and embed EDI into the norms and culture of the School. Overall, the committees role is to consider and advise the School on matters relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
The terms of reference specify the aims and objective of the committee, and also the current membership. Although the committee has a set membership, staff members / students outside the formal membership are welcome to attend.
If you wish to suggest items for this committee to discuss, please contact the Committee Secretary (Fahmida Jamal).
Athena SWAN is a gender equality charter, which was initially focussed on women in STEM related subjects, and has since been expanded to cover gender equality issues more broadly and in all academic areas. It also now covers gender related issues that impact on PS staff too.
There are three levels of award: Bronze, Silver and Gold. SEF is currently undertaking the process to apply for the Bronze award.
An Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team has been formed in the School, and this team will focus on data collection and writing the application form. Various types of data is required for Athena SWAN including student data, data on staff recruitment, induction and promotion. Once the data has been collected, an action plan for the School will be formulated in order to address any areas of concern that have been identified. The School's EDI committee, will play an integral role in formulating and overseeing actions developed as part of the self-assessment process.
