QMUL hosted its third IET East London Network event on 28 August 2014. David Hampson-Ghani, the former project manager for the new Routemaster bus gave a fascinating talk about the project from the competition to design the new bus through the prototyping, including the consultation with user groups, building and testing to the introduction of the first routes. It included video footage of the grueling testing at Millbrook.
As the number 8 route, which runs close to QMUL, was the most recent route to be converted the Bow Garage operators provided a ‘Special Service’ destination bus which parked behind the Engineering Building. This enabled the attendees to not only see the inside from a passenger perspective but to inspect the engine bay and drivers seat and get a first hand commentary from the driver and three of the depot managers.
