Screening tests

Antenatal screening tests identify women with a high risk or chance of an affected pregnancy so that they can be offered a diagnostic test.

If the diagnosis is a pregnancy affected with Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, Patau syndrome women have the option of continuing the pregnancy or a termination of pregnancy.

Available screening tests

The Wolfson Institute Antenatal Screening Service provides three screening tests for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and two screening tests for Patau syndrome:

The Combined test only uses first trimester markers, and is performed at around 12 weeks of pregnancy.  The combined test provides an assessment for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome
