Screening Services

The Antenatal Screening Service at the Wolfson Institute offers routine screening services for hospitals and private screening services for women whose local hospital does not offer their preferred test.

Routine screening service

The Antenatal Screening Service provides screening on a routine basis to a number of NHS hospital trusts in the UK. The screening service process approximately 80,000 samples annually, making it one of the largest antenatal screening centres in the UK.

The tests

The Antenatal Screening Service offer the first trimester Combined test, second trimester Quadruple test, Reflex DNA screening and DNA only screening.

Transport of samples

We can arrange for the transport of samples from hospitals to the laboratory in London if required.

Results

Results are generally processed the day that the sample arrives at the laboratory. Therefore, results are usually available within 48 hours of the blood sample being taken.  Results are emailed to the antenatal screening team at the hospital.

Literature

Comprehensive information leaflets for both patients and staff are provided as part of the service.

Education and training

We will provide regular training sessions at hospitals using the Antenatal Screening Service for their routine screening.

Cost

The fee for providing routine screening will vary depending on the test(s) required and the number of samples processed. To discuss the routine screening service further, please contact us.

Private screening service

For women whose hospital does not offer their test of choice, the Antenatal Screening Service offer the screening tests on a private basis.

The tests

The Antenatal Screening Service offer DNA only screening and second trimester Quadruple test on a private basis.

Cost

DNA screening test - £300

The Quadruple test – £100

Performed at the Wolfson Institute or by your local GP or midwife. Please contact the Antenatal Screening Service for further information and appointments.

Transport of samples

For women having the DNA screening or the Quadruple test performed by their local GP or midwife, the Antenatal Screening Service can provide a sample kit which contains the necessary equipment for taking and transporting the sample. The sample should be returned in the envelope provided using the Royal Mail Special Delivery service.

Results

The Quadruple test results are usually available the day after the blood sample is taken.  Results for DNA screening can take up to 10 working days. Women are able to telephone the Antenatal Screening Service for their results and a copy will be emailed to them and their hospital if required.

Information leaflets are provided to women before they have the test performed.

The Antenatal Screening Service has a dedicated helpline to offer information and support. Staff are available to discuss the tests and results with women.

Arranging a test

There is no need for a GP or hospital referral. To arrange a DNA screening test or Quadruple test individuals should contact the Antenatal Screening Service on 020 78826293 or email a.n.screening@qmul.ac.uk

Currently, we need to refer our DNA tests to an external laboratory provider The samples will be sent to a laboratory that performs the testing using the same methodology and equipment.  This laboratory has not currently attained ISO15189 but meets the standards of DNA testing that our service requires.
