Wolfson research recognized in BMJ Digital Innovation Award
The BMJ 2020 Digital Innovation Team of the Year prize has been awarded to the Explain my Procedure & Barts Health NHS Trust team, for implementation of research led by Professor David Wald at the Wolfson Institute. Innovative video animations produced by the Wolfson team and subsequently introduced at Barts Health NHS Trust have radically improved patients’ understanding of clinical procedures and the trade-offs between benefits and risks. An evaluation of the project showed that it could save the NHS about £40 million a year if expanded across all specialties and trusts. The judges commented that the winning entry is a scalable solution, that has the potential to be applied across different situations to improve patient understanding and the consent process. Congratulations to the Explain my Procedure group, and to the Barts NHS Health Trust Team for their work in implementing this research in practice.
