Wolfson experts provide Obesity Intervention Plan to Government to prevent further COVID-19 deaths
Ahead of the UK Government’s imminent review of factors affecting the impact of COVID-19 on infected patients, the Wolfson Institute’s Action on Sugar and Action on Salt group has delivered an evidence-based plan for the Prime Minister to address obesity.

Obesity is an independent risk factor for more severe illness and death from COVID-19, with 78% of coronavirus infections occurring in overweight or obese individuals, and obesity being the main underlining cause of type 2 diabetes, itself a risk factor for more severe COVID-19. Among British adults one in three (28.7%) is classified as obese and 3.6% have severe obesity, one of the highest rates in the world, and yet there is no national programme to help individuals self-identify their weight status. The group of leading experts is calling for the government to improve advice, access to treatment, and prevention measures, and is urging ministers to act on previous government commitments to tackle the obesity crisis that the nation faced prior to COVID-19.
