Charles leads the Preventive Neurology Unit’s work on dementia. He is interested in predicting and preventing dementia through improved understanding of the causes. He has a particular clinical interest in rare, atypical and familial dementias. He is also researching strategies for treating dementia before symptoms begin. 

Charles studied preclinical medicine and neuroscience at Oxford before graduating in medicine from University College London with elective attachments in neurology at Harvard Medical School. He was awarded a Leonard Wolfson Clinical Research Fellowship at the UCL Dementia Research Centre, where he specialised in cognitive neurology. His PhD focussed on finding novel ways to measure and understand brain changes underlying loss of empathy in frontotemporal dementia.
