After experience in General surgery, general medicine and general psychiatry he trained in hyperbaric medicine and diving trauma in Egypt, and Emergency medicine and then Neurology at The Homerton and Royal London Hospitals before starting his psychiatric training in East London. He pursued higher training at The Maudsley and King's College Hospitals, focusing on General Adult, Liaison and Neuropsychiatry and conducting clinical research into neuropsychiatric aspects of movement disorders, deep brain stimulation, gastroenterology and neurogastroenterology. He returned to The Medical School as a Lecturer and Consultant Psychiatrist to pursue research into a neurophysiological model of chronic pain and the functional somatic syndromes, focusing on striatal motivational salience.
