Queen Mary has made a strategic commitment to delivering high-quality research-informed education; we actively recruit the best academics in their disciplines from around the world.

Our staff members have been honoured by election to Fellowships of prestigious organisations such as the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Academy of Engineering. We are proud to have thirteen National Teaching Fellows among our staff.


There are eight Nobel Laureates among former Queen Mary staff: Professor Charles Kao (Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009); Sir Henry Hallett Dale (Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1936); Lord Edgar Adrian (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1932); Sir Peter Mansfield FRS (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2003); Professor Joseph Rotblat (Nobel Peace Prize in 1995); Sir Ronald Ross (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1902); Sir John Vane FRS (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1982); Dr Mario Vargas Llosa (Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010).

In the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework, Queen Mary received a silver award, a mark of high quality teaching, learning and outcomes for its students, with national quality requirements consistently exceeded.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), Queen Mary was ranked 9th in the UK amongst multi-faculty institutions on the overall quality of its research and 5th for world leading or internationally excellent research outputs (4*/3*). Queen Mary departments ranked in the top ten nationally include: English and Drama, Linguistics, Medicine and Dentistry, Electronic Engineering & Computer Science, Engineering & Materials Science, Geography, Law, Chemistry, and Economics and Finance.

Queen Mary joined the Russell Group of leading UK universities in August 2012, confirming its reputation as one of the UK’s leading HEIs. The invitation to join was testament to Queen Mary’s strategic commitment to the highest quality of research, but also to the best possible educational, cultural and social experience for its students.

For 2018, Queen Mary is ranked 121st in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and 21st in the world for its international outlook based on the percentage of international students and staff and internationally co-authored papers. We are ranked eighth in the UK and 42nd globally based on citation levels.
