Materials Science and Engineering with Management

Overview

A programme for ambitious students who want to combine the numerical, analytical and design skills of materials engineering with an in-depth understanding of business.

Taught jointly by the Schools of Engineering and Materials Science and Business and Management, the programme draws on the strengths of each to help you develop both engineering expertise and business acumen.

The business modules are designed specifically for this programme, taught alongside other mathematicians, engineers and scientists. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the corporate environment, covering financial accounting, projects, entrepreneurship, business analytics, strategy, management and human resources.

Alongside, you’ll study the physical and chemical structure, properties, manufacturing and design of materials.

In the final year you’ll undertake an individual project linked to the current internationally recognised research taking place in the School, applying the theory you’ve learnt in the first two years of study.

Structure

You can complete your Materials Science and Engineering with Management degree in three or four years. If you choose to do a year in industry or study abroad, this will take place in Year 3 and Year 3 modules will instead be studied in Year 4.

I really enjoyed the student-centred learning module. The thought process involved in solving the tasks they set you is really engaging and extremely varied. One week I would be looking at characterisation techniques and the next I would be building a boat. I had a lot of fun with this module and developed a lot of other skills while doing it.

Teaching and learning

You'll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, problem-solving classes, laboratory practicals and problem-based learning.

You should plan for 14-17 hours of formal teaching each week, plus time spent on group projects. For every hour spent in class, you’ll complete a further one to two hours of independent study.

Assessment

Assessment typically includes a combination of coursework (presentations, assignments, essay report writing, in-class tests, research and project work) and/or examinations in May or June.

IBInternational Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum of 32 points overall, including 6,5,5 from three Higher Level subjects. At least two subjects of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry are required at Higher Level.

Access HEWe consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline. Entry will normally be to the BEng or BSc. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis. Before a decision is made, applicants will be invited to a Maths test at Queen Mary, normally in April. This Maths test will assess whether an applicants ability in Maths is at the required level. Applicants will be contacted shortly after the test with a decision on their application.
GCSEMinimum five GCSE passes including English at grade C or 4.
EPQAlternative offers may be made to applicants taking the Extended Project Qualification.
