You voted: The canal!Students riding by the canal at the QMUL Mile End campus

The canal area at our Mile End campus was by far the most popular spot. This little oasis is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is a great place for hanging out with friends and watching the world go by. It's especially beautiful in the summer, when the canal comes alive with greenery and wildlife. Why not take a walk along the bank north towards Victoria Park for even more beautiful surroundings?

The Queens' Building

The modern-day Queens’ Building located on Mile End Road was actually the original People’s Palace back when QMUL was first opened. Designed to bring education and culture to the local community, it featured a concert hall (the Queen's Hall), a winter garden, library, swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts and the technical schools. Nowadays it’s home to a number of central services, administrative offices, schools and teaching rooms.

The Octagon

Built in 1887, the Octagon in the Queens’ Building was originally the QMUL library, designed by Victorian architect ER Robson and inspired by the Reading Room at the British Museum. It’s now used for a variety of functions, including university ceremonies and events, external events and exams.

Royal London Dental Hospital

The Royal London Dental Hospital is a leading, internationally renowned teaching hospital based at the Whitechapel campus. Since spring 2014, it has been the home of QMUL’s School of Dentistry. The Dental School and hospital houses the most modern and technologically advanced equipment in the UK, following more than a decade of planning and work.

Whitechapel Library

Based in the Grade II-listed St Augustine with St Philip's Church, Whitechapel Library is the main library for students of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Its early English style architecture with towering ceilings makes it an inspiring place to study. The stained-glass windows are a favourite among students. It also houses the Royal London Hospital Museum.

The Griff Inn Bar & Kitchen

The Griff Inn Bar & Kitchen is located at the Whitechapel campus at Barts and The London Students’ Association (BLSA). It provides a relaxed and easy-going environment for students and customers to socialise with friends and colleagues. There’s a great food menu which offers options for those with special dietary requirements. Happy hour is 4–6pm!

Graduate Centre

The new Graduate Centre is an iconic addition to the Mile End campus, but what makes it special are the views from the seventh floor. The postgraduate common room opens out onto a wooden deck terrace area with stunning views of London. It’s the perfect environment for working or chilling out with friends while gazing across the London skyline with an almost 360 degree field of vision.

Cafe Grad

Cafe Grad located on the ground floor of the new Graduate Centre at the Mile End campus offers a range of tasty cakes, sandwiches, pastries, grab and go snacks and serves Starbucks Coffee. It’s the ideal spot to stop by as you pass through the Mile End campus and need a place to reflect on the day while watching the world go by through the floor to ceiling windows.

St Benet's Chapel

St Benet's is a Christian chapel and meeting place at the Mile End campus open to all students and staff at QMUL, whatever your beliefs. The Chapel is a beautiful, peaceful space and is open for you to use at all times. The Lounge is a wonderful place to relax, play games, chat, make yourself drinks, cereals and toast, and even work. The Quiet Room is a former library, with desks to work at or play board games on.

The Multi-Faith Centre

The Multi-Faith Centre is situated in the Students' Union Hub at the Mile End campus. Its two large rooms and adjacent washing facilities are designed as places of prayer, worship and reflection and are shared by students and staff of all faiths and beliefs. The rooms may also be booked by individual faith societies at specific times. You can check the times available on the timetable.

Novo Cemetery

The Grade II-listed Novo or Neuvo Beth Chaim Cemetery is one of only two exclusively Sephardic – Spanish and Portugese – cemeteries remaining in England. On Friday 11 April 2014 it was entered onto the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens by English Heritage as a site of important historic interest, under the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act 1953. In 2012 it underwent a renovation in order to preserve the cemetery and significantly improve the appearance and use of the surrounding area.

The Observatory

The Observatory is an interesting and relatively unknown feature at the Mile End campus. It is located on the roof of the School of Physics and Astronomy and provides the ideal location for undertaking astronomical observations within central London. The primary purpose of the observatory is for teaching undergraduate students studying for a BSc or MSci degree in astrophysics, but is also used as a key resource for the School’s outreach activities.

G27, Engineering Building

G27 in the Engineering Building is a bespoke undergraduate teaching space with state-of-the-art equipment to support teaching in the School of Engineering and Materials Science. It was re-opened in 2015 after a £17.5m spend as part of a major redevelopment totalling £30m to modernise, expand and enhance the space and facilities of the Engineering Building at the Mile End campus. It’s also the base of QMUL’s own Formula Student Society.
