Secondary Years

Widening Participation students in Years 7 - 11 take part in the activities listed below.

Our colleagues across the university also run their own outreach activities throughout the year. More information and links to specific departments can be found on our Outreach across Queen Mary webpage.

Year 8 Visits Days

Dates for the spring term will be sent on our E-Bulletin to teachers: Join the mailing list.

The day begins and ends at our Mile End Campus (E1 4NS) including a tour of the campus and lunch at our Italian restaurant, Muccis.

For Year 8 students only. Group size: 20-24 students, maximum of three accompanying teachers. Schools will be allocated one Visit Day each.

100% of the students attending must meet one or more Widening Participation eligibility criteria.

There are no attainment criteria to attend a Year 8 Visit day.

The visit is likely to be less beneficial to ‘Gifted and Talented’ students and those involved in other university programmes.

The visit introduces students to the university environment and raises their awareness of the options available, developing confidence, aspiration and a sense of belonging in a higher education setting.

The activities had enough variety to engage every student

The activities were engaging and fun. The day allowed students the opportunity to discover more about university and life as a student

Once a booking is confirmed, we will send you a personalised student data form. This needs to be completed by the parent/guardian of every student in attendance and returned to us 1 week before the event. We will send regular reminders for this information.

Year 11 Experience Health Sciences Week

Provisional dates: Monday 22 - Saturday 27 July 2019

Applications to this programme open on Monday 22 October and close on Monday 3 December 2018 at 5pm

We have been collaborating with The University of Warwick to deliver this programme for 6 years. It is a free residential week whereby students spend half the week at Warwick University and half at Queen Mary, staying in university accommodation at both sites. Half of the thirty students who are selected to attend are recruited from the Midlands, and half from London.

We ask teachers to promote this programme to students in their school, it takes place during the summer holidays, therefore, all correspondence is sent directly to the student and their parents in the run-up to the week.

The week includes:

  • Clinical practical sessions
  • 'Problem-based learning'
  • Discussion with current university students
  • Advice and guidance sessions designed to maximise chances of achieving an offer
  • Social activities
Going to two universities showed us how different they are...the summer school was absolutely fantastic...

Presentations, workshops and fairs

Please contact us, at least a month in advance, if you are holding an event for students in Year 7 - 11 about university. On occasion we are able to deliver presentations and workshops at schools or man a stall at a fair.

To attend these events we often send trained student ambassadors on our behalf, however during the months of May, June and July this is not possible due to exams and summer schools taking place.
