Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the top universities in the world (we are ranked in the top 20 universities in the UK (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016/17). We have an international reputation for educating bright, inquiring students over the last 130 years.
Our distinguished history
QMUL started life in 1887 as the People’s Palace, a Victorian philanthropic project that transformed lives by bringing education, recreation and culture to the working people of London’s East End.
We have grown considerably since then, with several distinguished colleges of the University of London joining us, each with its own remarkable achievements and history. These include Westfield College, one of the first colleges to provide higher education to women.
The internationally distinguished medical colleges of St Bartholomew’s (founded in 1123) and the Royal London Hospitals (founded in 1740) now form our Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
We are part of the Russell Group, which represents 24 of the UK’s leading universities.
