The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) machine at CERN will be upgraded (in 2026) to deliver ultimate luminosities resulting the High Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC). The upgrade is foreseen to increase the LHC design integrated luminosity by a factor of ten. The inner detecor of the ATLAS experiment will loose its performance and need to be upgraded with a new detector technology to suit the harsh HL-LHC conditions in terms of particle rates and radiation doses.

Dr. Shah is working on the development and testing of a new generation of silicon detectors that are radiation hard and are going to be used in the ATLAS experiment to handle the increased radiation rates during the HL-LHC. This will enhance the capability of the ATLAS experiment in vertexing and tracking, and will finally help in precision tests of the Standard Model (SM), and also identifying the new physics signatures such as dark matter, Higgs boson exotic decays, supersymmetry (SUSY), etc. that lie beyond the SM of particle physics.
