EDI Director: Peter Hobson (Head of School | Professor Of Physics)
As Head of School, it is extremely important to me that we collectively make the School more diverse, ensure that everyone feels included and that every opportunity is accessible to all.
I am an astronomer working on exoplanets and stars. I believe that science, and indeed any academic discipline, should be accessible to all and strongly benefits from a diverse and inclusive community. I joined the EDI committee to contribute to our continuing effort to create an equal, diverse and inclusive School.
BAME Champion: Karim Malik (Academic, AU)
I believe strongly in equality and creating a diverse place of work and opportunity for all. I volunteered as BAME Champion to help achieve this. I hope to give students, from BAME and non-BAME backgrounds, a role model they can aspire to.
LGBT+ Champion: Eram Rizvi (Academic, PPRC)
I believe strongly in equality and creating a diverse place of work and opportunity for all. I volunteered as LGBT+ Champion to help achieve this. The world has changed a lot since I came out in my late teens, but there remains a lot of work to be done.
Gender Champion: Tessa Baker (Academic, AU)
I’m a cosmologist working on gravitational waves. Throughout my training as a physicist I had strong female role models, and I’ve seen the difference that this can make. I want to make sure the same opportunities and encouragement are available to all in QMUL Physics
Disability Champion: Harvey Abraham-Green (Student Support Officer)
I volunteered as the Disability Champion because I want to ensure the school continues to be a positive and diverse community that is accessible to all.
I am a champion for equal opportunities to all and see my role within the School as ensuring a fair and consistent approach in decision making to help foster a positive work environment.
Oliver Dicks (Postdoc, CCMMP)
My postdoc experience has demonstrated to me that to get the most out of each individual, good communication is essential. I am motivated to make sure that there is cohesiveness between all parts of the SPA hierarchy and that postdocs have a clear voice.
As the Secretary for the School EDI committee, I am responsible for arranging committee meetings, and also communicating and coordinating with other School committee secretaries to ensure EDI issues are embedded and discussed across the board.
I am a cosmologist. I believe that science should be accessible to all, and benefits hugely from diversity. I’m particularly interested in how we can improve access to science degrees and careers, and work as a mentor for the Destination STEMM programme, and as a tutor for the Access Project.
I am a postdoc working in Theoretical Physics. In recent years I have enjoyed participating in outreach events and learning about different ways to make academia more inclusive. As part of the committee, I hope to continue these efforts and ensure that SPA is an open and welcoming environment for everyone.
I work on Organic-Lanthanide system for optical lasers and amplifiers. I have been taking part in the Women's Springboard Development Programme and would like to be involved in more initiatives of this type. I hope to do my bit to help people achieve their potential with equality.
I am a condensed matter physicist, working on designing new materials with interesting and useful properties. I joined the committee to help dismantle the barriers that prevent talented people from taking their place in physics.
I am a PhD student working on theoretical cosmology. As a PhD student rep, I work to make sure that PhD students have their voices and concerns heard within the School. I’m particularly committed to promoting mental health support. I hope to help towards the goal of making the world of physics much more accessible and representative of society as a whole.
Adil Mian (UG and BAME Student Representative)
As a BSc Physics student, I aim to ensure that my peers are given a STEM education that is representative of our environment. We should feel included in the curriculum as BAME students. I hope to achieve tangible change during my time at Queen Mary.
