School of Physics and Astronomy

Degree programmes

Our flexible programmes enable you to tailor your degree to best suit your interests and either take a broad overview or focus on a specialist area, aligned with our research specialisms in astrophysics, theoretical physics and particle physics. If you would like to pursue your chosen subject in more depth, four-year MSci programmes are available in all subject areas.

Taught by active researchers with a wealth of practical and academic expertise, you’ll learn the fundamental principles, gain access to some cutting-edge topics and be challenged to be your best. Plus, we have been ranked first in London for overall satisfaction for five years running in the National Student Satisfaction survey (2014 - 2018)

There is some flexibility between programmes and students may usually switch between programmes during their first year, as well as transferring from a BSc to an MSci programme subject to academic performance.

Use the table below to browse detailed information for each programme. For specific details on individual modules, please see the descriptions on our BSc module information page or MSci module information page.

BSc Physics with Foundation Year

Students who do not have the required high school qualifications for admission to this degree, and students who do not meet their UCAS Conditional offer may be considered for the 4 year degree (foundation year plus the 3 year degree).

International students with Year 12 or a completed international high school certificate qualify for the one year foundation programme commonly known as the ISEFP.

The foundation programme offers a range of transferable skills and an opportunity to improve on your knowledge content in relevant Maths and Science subjects. BSc and MSci Physics with Foundation Year offers progression to a range of degrees in the School of Physics and Astronomy, subject to academic performance at the end of the foundation year.

OpenPlus

We offer the OpenPlus programme in collaboration with the Open University. Students do not require any formal entry qualifications and will study flexibly at the Open University for the first part of the programme. Upon successful completion of the Open University part of the degree, you will transfer into the second year of the BSc/MSci degree at Queen Mary.
