The Large Hadron Electron Collider is a proposed upgrade to the LHC in which the existing proton or heavy ion beams collide with a newly constructed electron beam of nominal energy 60 GeV, simultaneously with ongoing pp or AA collisions. This talk will review the physics case, the currently foreseen technical realisation and the overall status of the project.
