The ATLAS upgrade programme includes the design, construction and replacement of the semiconductor tracker and pixel detector system, which is a critical component of any physics goals related to rare decay, new physics or precision Higgs studies at the high luminosity LHC. Data taking is scheduled to commence following the long shutdown 3 period, which is at the start of the next decade. The next 10 years will focus on detailed work on understanding the best possible silicon detector to build in order to maximise the physics output of the high luminosity running, and in doing so to lay the foundations for constructing the silicon pixel and strip tracker detector sub-systems. At QMUL we have a number of responsibilities related to the tracker upgrade silicon pixel and strip detectors and will be contributing to the remaining R&D, build and commissioning phase for this High Luminosity LHC project, prior to working with the data that we will create as a result. There are opoortunities to work on hardware development and simulation in this project.
The QMUL group is a member of the ATLAS and ATLAS upgrade programmes at CERN and this work is done as part of a coherent national programme of R&D, in coordination with our international partners. Travel both within the UK and abroad is expected for this project.
