School of Physics and Astronomy

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement for a PhD in the School is the equivalent of a British first class honours BA/SSc/EEng in physics or a related subject, or a more advanced qualification such as MSci, MMath or MSc/MA.

International and European qualifications

Our International Office publishes a list of countries/regions for which we have admissions information online.  Please see our central QMUL pages for international students.  We use UKNARIC to check the equivalency of International and European qualifications.

English language requirements

Non-native English speakers are required to have a minimum of IELTS (International English Language Testing Service): 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each category, or its equivalent.

Students that have yet to take an English proficiency test may still apply and will be made a conditional offer subject to meeting the minimum requirement for English proficiency.

English language and study skills at QMUL

QMUL offers a range of pre-sessional and in-sessional English language courses for students who have not quite reached the required standard of language ability, or for those wishing to improve their English language and study skills.
