Project Title: Fractionation processes and chemical complexity across the Galaxy.
Project Description:

Detection of interstellar molecules and studying their origins, properties, and interactions has been an important aspect of astrochemical research. With over 150 different molecular species detected in the interstellar medium (ISM), ranging from simple diatomics like CO to complex organic molecules (COMs, carbon-based molecules contain 6 or more atoms), there has been some significant progress in understanding how stellar systems form and how chemical complexity evolves during the process of star and planet formation.

Since molecules are excellent probes of the physical conditions and history of the environments where they reside, my project contains two main focuses:

  1. To provide more stringent observational constraints on the nitrogen fractionation. By measuring the ratio between two stable isotopes of nitrogen, 14N and 15N toward potential isotopic reservoirs, we aim at enhancing our understanding of how these ratios are linked to the past chemical history in different regions;
  2. To explore the chemical complexity toward giant molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre. The centre of our Milky Way is an extreme environment exposed to energetic processes such as intense UV radiation field, X-rays and cosmic rays. To search for COMs and even prebiotic molecules in such hard conditions would allow us to better understand the origin of these molecules as well as their formation and destruction pathways. This might even help to elucidate the human quest on the origin of life.
