Project Title: Search for the decay of a Higgs boson in the di-muon channel in pp collisions at √ s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector.
Despite its predicted existence in the 1960s, evidence of a particle consistent with a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson was not found until July 2012. Following this, many analyses have been carried out with the intention of studying the various properties of the Higgs and seeing how well they agree with the SM theory.
My project looks into finding evidence for the decay of a SM Higgs boson in the di-muon channel using the full Run-2 dataset recorded by ATLAS. Since the branching ratio of a SM Higgs is proportional to fermion mass, H ->μμ is a relatively rare decay - around 3 in 10000 Higgs decays occur this way. Despite this, H ->μμ allows us to directly measure the coupling strength between a SM Higgs and second-generation fermions. Any discrepancies found between our measurements and the SM predictions could indicate contributions from previously unseen particles, such as Exotic Higgs bosons.
