Queen Mary Astronomer nominated for WIRED Audi Innovation Award

Guillem Anglada Escudé of the School of Physics and Astronomy was one of the nominees for the prestigious WIRED Scientific Breakthrough award, one of the WIRED Audi Innovation Awards for 2016, for his discovery of a planet in orbit around the nearest star to Earth, Proxima Centauri.

Anglada Escudé led an international team of astronomers who successfully searched for the planet, which may even have some Earth-like properties. They used data from a number of telescopes and instruments, using the Doppler technique to detect tiny tell-tale wobbles in the motion of the star itself, indicating the presence of the planet.

The WIRED Audi Innovation Awards highlight and celebrate people achieving extraordinary things. The winner of the award was announced on 9 November.
