NEWTONIAN AND POST-NEWTONIAN COSMOLOGY: C → ∞ AND BEYOND

Abstract: I will begin by examining the role of Newtonian gravity in cosmology and making some remarks about the literature and the universe that we live in. I will then introduce the post-Friedmann formalism, a post-Newtonian-esque expansion that has been developed at Portsmouth. This formalism suggests that a vector potential is required in the metric on non-linear scales for consistency of the Einstein equations. The second half of the talk will be devoted to examining this vector potential, its amplitude on non-linear scales and the possible observational consequences.
