NEW THEORIES OF GRAVITY (CONTINUUM MECHANICS AND GENERAL RELATIVITY)

20 March 2013

Time: 4:30pm
Venue: Maths 103
Series: The London Relativity and Cosmology Seminar
Speaker: Christian Boehmer (UCL)
Abstract: This talk is mainly about Newton's and Einstein's theories and gravity. After reviewing their theories and discussing some recent suggestions to modify General Relativity, I will take some inspiration from continuum mechanics to reinterpret them. This change of viewpoint will allow us to extend the framework of both these theories. We are now able to formulate and much more general theory of gravity. However, the resulting theories are quite simple and the new parameters introduced can be determined by experiments.
