The magnetic field plays a crucial role in the dynamics of protoplanetary discs by driving turbulence and launching an outflow. Both of these processes lead to angular momentum transport and therefore enable accretion onto the central star. I will describe the evolution of a large scale magnetic field in protoplanetary discs, highlighting in particular its consequence for the launching of an outflow. I will then describe the effect of the magnetic field on the migration of a planet embedded in the disc.
