In this talk I will overview the implications of a new stablished universal inequality A >=8pi|J| between the area A and the angular momentum J of an axisymmetric (dynamical) black hole horizon. In particular I will explain the phenomenon of the formation of extreme Kerr-throats and a complete characterization of the geometry of (dynamical) horizons (a long standing problem) only from the difference A - 8pi|J|. The work, which is novel, has its roots and is very much related to developments done at the Albert Einstein Institute.
